Model train shows are a place where model railroaders swap ideas, look for that one car missing from their set or just chat and browse with like minded people. But model train shows are not just for avid hobbyists. All kinds of people come to these shows to enjoy the trains, the layouts, and the action. Going to a model train show is an enjoyable experience for the whole family. Many people first develop an interest in model trains after going to a model train show as a child – or even as an adult!

At the largest model train shows you can find all the big manufacturers, each displaying their latest models. You can buy trains, scenery and even complete sets on the spot or place an order to be delivered to your home. The newest and best in model railroading is on hand for you to check out.

Most of the model train shows have lots of interactive displays, with fun things for kids to do and experts on hand to answer your questions. ome even have a riding train for the children to enjoy. Live music, auctions and seminars add to your pleasure at these shows.

Model train shows can vary from large travelling exhibitions to smaller, more localized ones with a permanent store front or building as a base of operations. The permanent ones boast layouts of model trains in excess of 20′ long by 30′ wide, often depicting a local area that is instantly recognizable by nearby residents. Railway scenery is often created to show a time when trains were the main means of transporting goods and passengers. These displays contain amazing detail and massive amounts of man hours in their construction.

The travelling model train shows allow people to look first hand at a vast selection of model railroading products in one place, much more than can be carried by any one store. Usually held at a convention hall or indoor arena, train shows normally last for a weekend, giving you ample time to see and experience the entire show. Wear comfortable shoes though, as there is a lot to see and do at one of these model train shows!

Seminars held at these are for the serious model railroader and the novice alike.  They include subjects such as new products, new technologies and upcoming products for the next year. A brief lecture along with a product demonstration, with a short question and answer period at the end are pretty common place. These are designed to be short and to the point so that you are still able to see the entire show and learn about anything new that may be coming on the market.

The auctions held at these model train shows include not only model train cars and sets, but antique train memorabilia. Pictures and slides of the old steam trains, statuettes and wall maps are just a few of the items readily available for bidding. For anyone who likes trains, whether it is the full sized ones or the model trains we grew to love as children, model train shows are a great outing not only for them but for the whole family.

In the United States, the National Model Railroad Association holds a convention each year. The location changes each year so that all parts of the country have a chance to host the event.
