Marklin Model Trains

marklin model trains
I am a model train enthusiast and am just starting the hobby. I have a Roco HO model train set and wonder if I

can can purchase other brand (other makes, eg Marklin, Hornby, etc) and attach to my set? I really would appreciate some advice. Thanks

yes, all standard HO brands will interchange and run with each other…..

the only exceptions are some of the more expensive types such as brass imports and/or custom / craftsman type kits, but at your entry level, they are too expensive and not something you will be buying anyway.

all standard, out of the box brands will run together on any set

The thing with freight trains is that you can't tell where they all stop because unlike passenger trains, they go anywhere at anytime. (Hence why you have to be alert at railroad crossings).

Now, Canada has two national freight railroads and a bunch of smaller ones that only have a small number of trains. More than likely, the two railroad lines your asking about belong to either Canadian Pacific, or Canadian National.

To most, the only difference is the engines (there are others if you know what to look for); Canadian Pacific (CP) has mostly red engines. Canadian National (CN) have mostly black engines.

As to where these railroad tracks go.. The only answer I can give you is that they go across the country. CP and CN are national railways, so the move things from one side of the country to the other (sometimes into the states too).

From looking at google maps, the two lines appear to go south toward Toronto. From there, they can pass through Toronto, Mississauga, Richmond hill, Markham, Brampton (just to name the larger cities) and continue in either direction along Lake Ontario. Going through cities and towns; some end up going toward Quebec, Niagara Falls and/or Windsor.

As for the trains going north through Newmarket; they too have a number of ways they can go. I followed a line that appears to go back southwest (after Barrie) and might head toward Niagara. The line also keeps going north. The west country trains pass through to Sudbury, then goes west to the rest of the country. I believe there is a way for the trains to go east as well.

The Mount Albert line goes north and roughly follows Highway 11 up to North Bay. From North Bay, the trains an go either east or west, and there are tracks heading into farther north into Northern Ontario.

With two National Railroads, there are two sets of tracks through major stops (Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver, etc). One company normally does not use the others tracks, so they have there own to get where they need to go. The only way to tell which of the two ones the railroad tracks without having a freight train there to check (they both rent there tracks to others such as Via Rail and Go Transit) is to look at the railroad crossing gates.

The gates look exactly the same, but you will notice on the control box somewhere near by there will be the crossing number. This number should have the initials of the company that owns it. (This is normally in black lettering on the silver/grey parts).

Yes all HO scale railroad equipment, engines, cars, track are ok to mix. There might be some differences in the track connectors. This a guess on that. One thing, not all brands of track are created equal. Sometimes inexpensive track can cost you more in the long haul. Like many things in life, you get the quality you pay for!

Take a pencil eraser and start rubbing down every inch of your track. Then brush the filing's and residue away. After you do this do the same to your locomotive.

What happens is the motor draws a more steady higher current than your lamp does. Your track over time has a residue that builds up and you do not get a good contact. Do not use sandpaper as this will eventually break down your track and you will loose the integrity and you will have noticeable hiccups along your track.
I've had everything from newer N guage track that set up for a year to post war era Lionel's. This is the #1 issue with trains that have set up for long periods of time.

I would open a sketch, lets say on the right plane
Draw a circle and dimension the outer diameter
Next I would offset that circle to the thickness of the belt
Next I would extrude that sketch by mid plane to the width of the belt
Now I would create another sketch off the same plane (right) and select the face of the belt and select convert entities in your sketch list
Now I would take the line command and center a tooth top and bottom (or off set them if need belt)
Now trim off the excess lines after you dimension your teeth.
Extrude the teeth sketch the same way as you did the belt.
Now select that feature in the feature manager and do a circular pattern.
You can then choose how many teeth you want and it will space it out for you.
